Who Didn't See This Coming?
Getting caught up in other kinds of stuff, I neglected to address the cancellation of Dollhouse. I wish I could say it was a shock to the system but it isn't. It's a shame though, because Season 2 was showing an increase in quality and there are plenty of other things that FOX could bin instead.
Now that the show is gone, what are Joss Whedon's options? I can think of a few.
- Try taking the series to another station. Albeit a smaller one than FOX and even they might not be interested. Dollhouse is pretty out there as series go. Though SyFy are a likely choice.
- Movie it? It worked for Firefly mainly but I can't see studios fighting over themselves to bring this series to the big screen.
- Concentrate on the Buffy comics. 2010 will finally see Season 8 end and I'm pretty sure we'll get spoilers about Season 9 as well.
- Do another TV series. Preferably not on FOX.
What are other people's opinions on the Dollhouse situation? Were FOX right to pull the plug or has Joss Whedon been shafted by the wretched station once again?
A lot of people are comparing this to Firefly's axing but honestly I think its completely different. Apart from the Friday slot, Dollhouse was given a heap of chances, the lead in from Terminator, the chance at a second season, and the promise of airing all second season episodes. Many shows getting the axe these days, don't get those kind of chances especially the last one. Considering the miserable ratings, Fox have actually been quite generous to Joss, by promising to show the rest of the episodes.
ReplyDeleteI personally think Joss should concentrate on the comics. I really don't think Dollhouse will find another home out there in TV or movie form. The show didn't really have a lot of fans of its own, I would guess that 99% were people who were fans of Joss' other work, so I don't think the show has the kind of Browncoat following that will get it renewed.
Don't get me wrong it is a shame, but really the show just wasn't good enough.
I think you raise some brilliant points. I do think the show showed significant improvement but the realist in me never really thought that it would be a show that would be around for a long time. Some shows will go the distance but Dollhouse wasn't going to be one of them.
ReplyDeleteI think TV is Joss's strongest medium so I hope that he does one day have another series that will go the distance like Buffy.
