Written And Directed by Billy Bryk And Finn Wolfhard
Claire: "You guys are fucking insane."
Bobby: "I agree with Claire, he's definitely killing at random."
Jason: "I'm not killing at all!"
I get the feeling that releasing a summer slasher flick during the spring might not have been the best of ideas. Although with this movie, I'm not even sure a theatrical release. This isn't a terrible movie but it's not the sort of one you'd feel the need to see in cinemas.
Anyways, you've got a twenty four year slightly loveable loser named Jason Hochberg (Fred Hechinger). Jason would rather go back to his poorly paid summer counsellor job at Camp Pineway than do a law internship. Needless to say, Jason's mother was not that impressed.
Jason in general did seem to generate a lot of disdain and apathy from the fellow counsellors in the movie. Those counsellors included idiot duo Bobby (Billy Bryk) and Chris (Finn Wolfhard), social media obsessed Demi (Pardis Saremi), moody Mike (D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai), theatre nerd Ezra (Matthew Finlan). These people were also very, very quick to assume the worst in Jason too.
In fact, the only counsellor who was nice to Jason happened to be Claire (Abby Quinn). She took pity on Jason, tried to get him to stand up for himself during the movie. Claire also went out of her way to try and save Jason at least twice. It turned out that she was pretty good with a bow and arrow.
As for the killers, themselves. Yes there was two and no, Jason wasn't one of them. It was Demi and Mike with motives that reminded me of Scream 4. Sadly, they're not as compellingly handled but their respective demises are rather funny.
- The opening scene had head counsellors John (Adam Pally) and Kathy (Rosebud Baker) brutally killed off.
- There was a romance subplot with Chris and Shannon (Krista Nazaire). Also did it seem like Mike might have been attracted to Bobby in spite of his protests?
- Standout music: Badfinger's Day After Day.
- Chronology: Present day at Camp Pineway. The movie was shot in Ontario.
Hell Of A Summer isn't an awful movie but it's not an awfully must see one either. The characters are fine but feel bland and even the kills lack a certain punch. I'm not sure if even a younger audience will be entertained by this.
