My Review of Atlantis's 2x04: "The Marriage Of True Minds"
Written by Lucy Watkins
Directed by Declan O'Dwyer
Hercules (to Jason): "We're accompanying Ariadne to her wedding?"
It might have sounded incredulous but I would've been more shocked had Jason not decided to help Ariadne on her journey to Telemon's home of Aegina and even more so had both Pythagoras and Hercules not helped too. Aside from that, very little in the episode itself will go down as a surprise to people.
The journey to Aegina was more or less a piss poor attempt by both Pasiphae and the wavering Telemon to bump off Ariadne and needless to say it failed when the latter had a minor attack of conscience and revealed his intentions a bit too early. For his efforts, he did get stabbed by the annoyed Pasiphae and left for dead, so I guess he has a chance to maybe redeem himself next week.
As for the rest of the episode, there was the attempt to heighten the danger by having Ariadne, her men, Jason, Pythagoras, Hercules and a dying Dion stranded in the desert. It gave the episode a chance for Jason and Ariadne to have an honest conversation with each other and there was some nice guest characters with Orpheus and his wife too. I did however find it amusing how quickly they both sussed who exactly Ariadne, in spite of her attempts to disguise her royalty.
The final five minutes of the episode offered a bit of excitement in a cave where Jason and Ariadne came up against Pasiphae and Medea and led to a decent enough cliffhanger which put Jason in a suitable amount of peril I guess.
- While it would be nice to see her show better judgement, Ariadne's archery skills weren't so bad in this episode.
- Medea seems to have difficulty controlling her power. That's twice now this series.
- Another Medusa mention. Why do we have to wait until 2015 to see her again?
- If Dion's dead, what the odds that Ariadne's next advisor will be someone on Pasiphae's payroll?
Maybe I need to watch this episode again because I've read seemingly positive reviews but for me, outside of a few choice moments, The Marriage Of True Minds just felt dull and plodding in parts. Or am I being too harsh on the show?
Rating: 6 out of 10
