Justice League Unlimited - Episodes 36-39 Reviews

Final batch of episodes and there's an unavoidable fate for Supergirl and the return of Darkseid.

Episode 36: Far From Home

Supergirl and Brainiac 5. Maybe one of the most underrated couples in the DC Universe. Their first meeting wasn't exactly love at first sight. Supergirl along with Green Arrow and John Stewart wind up in the 31st Century where they encounter Brainiac 5 and Bouncing Lad with the Fatal Five as the main baddies here. In the end, Supergirl made the choice to stay with Brainiac 5 and it's in the same episode she had a costume change. 7/10

Episode 37: Ancient History

Earlier in the season, Hawkman was introduced. He's back for this episode as Shadow Thief decided to show both him and Hawkgirl their respective past lives in Ancient Egypt. We also got a bit of love triangle with the pair and John Stewart along with Hawkman making a sacrifice to stop Shadow Thief. There's also a poignant final scene where Hawkgirl asked Batman to tell her about her son. 7/10

Episode 38: Alive!

The first of a two part series finale. First of all, there's some major infighting with the Secret Society. Tala's attempts to use Gorilla Grodd to usurp Lex Luthor ended up backfiring on her spectacularly. Lex had no problem siphoning Tala's magic in order to revive Brainiac. Instead he ended up bringing back Darkseid. The episode ended on a rather explosive note. 9/10

Episode 39: Destroyer 

The series finale. Darkseid being back for another attempt to destroy everything. The Justice League and Secret Society (who are down some members) being forced to work together. It was totally expected, plot wise and as a series finale, it was a brilliant way to end the DC Animated Universe. The final shot in particular was a nice note to end on. 9/10

And thus concluded my time with the DC Animated Universe.

Justice League Unlimited - Episodes 31-35 Reviews

My penultimate blog on this show. This batch of episodes had dissent in the ranks, body swaps and grudge matches.

Episode 31: Flash And Substance 

Anyone wanted an episode dedicated to the Flash Museum? Well, you've got one with this episode. It was about to open and The Flash was pretty pleased with himself. His Rogues Gallery on the other hand were more determined to spoil the day. Batman and Orion had to protect The Flash from being killed with Orion realising the Scarlet Speedster had more depth than he believed. There's a nice subplot involving The Trickster as voiced by Mark Hamill. 8/10

Episode 32: Dead Reckoning 

I know this show preceded Justice League Dark but I do like that certain members have factored into this show. This episode had the Secret Society steal from a monastery that Deadman was occupying. Deadman enlisted Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman to help him. This episode delved into Deadman's relationship with Rama Kushna and there's a shock moment when Deadman used Batman to kill Devil Ray. 8/10

Episode 33: Patriot Act

A nod to the Seven Soldiers Of Victory, I have to admit this episode didn't really do much for me. I mean there's a pointed commentary from the general public being uninterested in the lesser known heroes and more scheming from General Eiling revealed. It's just that the episode itself didn't particularly excite me. 5/10

Episode 34: The Great Brain Robbery

Ooh, a brain swap episodes. Lex Luthor and The Flash. An absolutely brilliant idea that's brilliantly executed. Among the Secret Society, Lex had overthrown Gorilla Grodd as leader and was in danger of being overthrown himself while also being in a relationship with Tala. This also gave Michael Rosenblum the chance to voice Lex Luthor in animation and he had fun with the role. 7/10

Episode 35: Grudge Match 

I'm not really a big fan of these fight club style episodes but this one was actually pretty fun. You had Black Canary, Huntress, Vixen and Hawkgirl all dragged into this courtesy of Roulette and Sonar. It's also set in Bludhaven, so there's a very quick Nightwing cameo. Mostly the episode was a nice way of further exploring the frenemy dynamic between Black Canary and Huntress. 7/10

Justice League Unlimited - Episode 26-30 Reviews

In this batch of episodes, there's a look into Terry McGinnis, a rivalry between heroes and another who decides they need a change.

Episode 26: Epilogue

Originally this Batman Beyond heavy episode was supposed to serve as a series finale to this show but then another season happened. Anyways, you've got a much older Amanda Waller giving Terry McGinnis some much needed insight into his origins and how Bruce Wayne turned out ti be his biological father. There's an opportunity to bring back characters such as Ace and the Phantasm as well as Terry planning to propose to Dana. It's a fantastic episode. 9/10

Episode 27: I Am Legion 

Season 3 of the show kicked off with a team up comprising of Hawkgirl, The Flash, Fire and Ice and there's a nice subplot with both The Flash and Fire clearly being into one another. The important plot though would be Lex Luthor escaping prison and joining the Legion of Doom, only this version are known as the Secret Society. Yes, we got to see their iconic lair and there's a plot with the Spear of Longinus that Lex and company steal from the Blackhawks. 7/10

Episode 28: Shadow Of The Hawk

At some point we had to meet Carter Hall aka Hawkman and why not early into the final season? They meet but Carter definitely seemed to be more into Hawkgirl than she was into him. On the plus side, we did get more insight into Thanagarian history, there was a decent supporting role from Batman and Shadow Thief made for a good guest villain in the episode. 7/10

Episode 29: Chaos At The Earth's Core 

This episode had a motley crew of John Stewart, S.T.R.I.P.E., Stargirl and Supergirl working together with Warlord. Who were they against? Oh, that's right, we got the likes of Metallo, Silver Banshee and Deimos and the whole story took place inside a world in the Earth's Core. There's an amusing rivalry between Stargirl and Supergirl as they mostly clash before they ended up bonding. 6/10

Episode 30: To Another Shore 

Fans of Martian Man Hunter should be happy that he's gotten a bigger role in this episode but at the same time, he also decided it was time to step away from the Watchtower. There's a team up with him, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow and King Faraday. Throw them into an icy location and have then go up against Giganta, Killer Frost, Heatwave and Devil Ray and it's a pretty solid one. 6/10

Justice League Unlimited - Episodes 21-25 Reviews

In this batch of episodes, there's trouble for both Hawkgirl and The Question. Meanwhile, the Cadmus arc came to a head.

Episode 21: Hunter's Moon

One of the great things about this show would be the fact that Hawkgirl's betrayal of the Justice League continued to have consequences. This time it was a rogue group of Thanagarians who were determined to get even with her. Another great thing about this episode was Hawkgirl being paired with Vigilante and Vixen while also discussing John Stewart with the latter. Not surprised that Hawkgirl's still got feelings for John. 7/10

Episode 22: Question Authority

Now it's time for some focus on the Question. He confronted Superman about the Justice Lord timeline and believed it was going to happen in this timeline too. The Question also ended up being captured and tortured by Lex Luthor. Question being the distressed dude was a good way of bringing Huntress out as she was the one who rescued him. There's also a subplot with Captain Atom and General Eiling with Mantis as an opening fight scene. 7/10

Episode 23: Flashpoint

The start of the end of the Cadmus arc. Not to be confused with a certain popular DC Comics arc. There's a fight scene with Superman and Captain Atom along with Lex causing absolute mayhem with Cadmus. You had scenes with both Green Arrow and The Flash having to deal with public backlash along with Amanda Waller recruiting Galactea to attack the Watchtower with Ultimen clones. A very good start to ending this arc. 7/10

Episode 24: Panic In The Sky

The middle part of this arc had a pretty great fight scene with Supergirl and Galactea with the former really getting under the latter's skin. There's some great scenes with Batman and Amanda Waller as the pair realised that Lex was responsible for everything that's been happening. The episode ended on the best cliffhanger with Lex having Brainiac emerging from inside him. A brilliant way to lead into the last part of this arc. 8/10

Episode 25: Divided We Fall

This felt like a series finale to me and honestly, it could have been. It tied up the Cadmus arc nicely, forged an uneasy alliance between the Justice League and Amanda Waller and also saw changes being promised with the League moving forward. It was a perfect place to end the show along with Lex/Brainiac's defeat but there's fourteen more episodes to go. 8/10

Justice League Unlimited - Episodes 16-20 Reviews

In this bunch of episodes, we've got the ongoing problem of Cadmus, returning villains and hero clashes.

Episode 16: The Doomsday Sanction 

This batch of episodes really did factor Cadmus almost throughout with Amanda Waller at the forefront of almost everything. However, that didn't stop the likes of Milo from releasing Doomsday and for the latter to immediately go up against Superman in a rather brutal fashion. Superman's method of dealing with Doomsday however seemed to make Batman think that Cadmus might have a point being scared of the Justice League. 7/10

Episode 17: Task Force X

Yes, it's a Suicide Squad episode but that title was never going to make it on to a kids show, so Task Force X it is. Amanda Waller recruited Rick Flag who then recruited Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Clock King and Plastique. Their mission was to break into the Watchtower and steal the Annihilator. It wasn't an easy task and it certainly put the Watchtower at maximum unease but Task Force X actually won this round. Well, more like Amanda Waller did. 7/10

Episode 18: The Balance

Was anyone looking for a follow up to Paradise Lost from the previous show? Even if you weren't, you've got one. One part of the episode had Tala rescue Felix Faust's soul from Tartarus and the latter trapping her in a mirror while taking over the Annihilator's body. Then you had Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl putting their differences to one side to venture into the Underworld in order to stop the chaos that Faust had bee causing. Throw in some roles for Hippolyta, Ares and the Demons Three and this was a delightful episode. 8/10

Episode 19: Double Date

Slightly breaking away from anything connected to Cadmus, how about a revenge thriller with two clashing superhero couples. Are you Team Green Arrow/Black Canary or are you Team Huntress/The Question? Gotta be honest, I did lean a bit more towards the latter pairing in this episode. Anyways, Huntress was determined to kill mob boss Steven Mandragora with The Question's help and it was up to Black Canary and Green Arrow to stop her. Huntress's reasons were pretty justified but it was the presence of Mandragora's son that made Huntress change her mind. 8/10

Episode 20: Clash 

They say never meet your heroes and sadly for Captain Marvel aka Shazam that sadly turned out to be true. Becoming the latest member of the Justice League should've been the best thing for him but his clashing with Superman over Lex Luthor ended up with him quitting the team. It might have been more interesting if Luthor had genuinely been redemptive but the episode revealed he manipulated events to strengthen his presidency bid and that he was working with Amanda Waller. 7/10

Justice League Unlimited - Episodes 11-15 Reviews

The first season ended with some time travelling hijinks and the second season began with a fight club and a trip to Apokolips.

Episode 11: Wake The Dead

This episode began with a bunch of kids playing around with magic in order to protect themselves from being bullied. After that, they're absent from a story that brought back the return of Solomon Grundy. It's also a story that was the building blocks for Hawkgirl getting a very public redemption, one that John Stewart was more than willing to back up as well. Solomon's reduced to a more brutish state than his last appearance. 7/10

Episode 12: The Once And Future Thing, Part One: Weird Western Tales 

The first of a two part finale. In the Watchtower, you had Batman, Wonder Woman and John Stewart somewhat talking to each other before Chronos popped up and then they all got dragged into the Wild West. This meant being paired with characters like Jonah Hex and Bat Lash to defeat Tobias Manning. Then the episode ended with Chronos getting his powers back and a future completely different than expected. 8/10

Episode 13: The Once And Future Thing, Part Two: Time, Warped 

Ending this first season, we've got Batman, Wonder Woman and John Stewart in a far future where Chronos has dominion over everything and the likes of the Jokerz and Ghoul as enforcers. Fortunately there's also Static Shock, Batman Beyond, Bruce Wayne and Warhawk to help out the trio. Warhawk in particular represented a huge spoiler for John. Chronos was at his most vindictive in this episode, making his comeuppance all the more satisfying to watch. 8/10

Episode 14: The Cat And The Canary

The second season got off to a modest start with Green Arrow and Black Canary enjoy some friendly sparring/flirting before Wildcat somewhat came between. Mainly because he was involved in some underground fight club run by Roulette. We got some fight scenes that were fun enough, though Green Arrow was nerfed a lot in the second half of the episode. 6/10

Episode 15: The Ties That Bind/Miracles Happen

With Darkseid indisposed, it turns out that Apokolips has become open to a power grab. Granny Goodness wants it but needs Kalibak but the latter's being held captive by Virman Vundabar. Granny then took Oberon prisoner so Mister Miracle and Barda along with The Flash will aid her cause. There's some nice flashbacks providing context to Mister Miracle's relationship with Granny Goodness before the latter got her just desserts. 7/10

Justice League Unlimited - Episodes 6-10 Reviews

In this batch of episodes, Supergirl has met her match, there are returning characters aplenty and new groups being formed.

Episode 6: Fearful Symmetry 

Supergirl vs. Power Girl anyone? That's basically the premise of this episode as the former found herself getting blamed for the latter's antics. Green Arrow and The Question were paired with Kara, attempting to crack down the reasons for her bad dreams and low and behold, it's Cadmus at the heart of her problems. Of course Power Girl is actually a character called Galatea but this episode kicked off the ongoing Cadmus arc for the series. 6/10

Episode 7: The Greatest Story Never Told 

And there's Booster Gold. He's a man from the future with aspirations of being a hero. Instead, he's more of an annoyance to the ever growing Justice League, who don't want to really deal with him. However this episode gave him a chance to step as a hero by going up against a scientist who turned himself into a black hole. Oh and he got a love interest too. 7/10

Episode 8: The Return

Oh this one lived up to its title. There was the return of Lex Luthor, who for once wasn't the villain of the piece. There was the return of Amazon, who was after Lex and a new purpose. There was also the return of Hawkgirl but that literally happened at the very last minute of the episode. Add to that the use of characters such as the Atom, John Stewart, the Guardians and Doctor Fate and this was quite the episode. 8/10

Episode 9: Ultimatum

A few episodes we were introduced to Project Cadmus and now, we're back with them. That meant having the likes of Amanda Waller, Professor Hamilton and Maxwell Lord pop up on screen. It also meanst the introduction of their group known as the Ultramen. The same group who turned out to be a problem for the Justice League with the exception of Long Shadow. An okay introduction for the short-lived group. 6/10

Episode 10: Dark Heart

Another average episode but one that's pretty packed with a lot of characters. This one had General Wade Eiling leading a military unit battling the Justice League. There was also a powerful alien nanotechnology that provided the biggest obstacle to the team. It's mostly Atom who saved the day with this one. 5/10

Justice League Unlimited - Episodes 1-5 Reviews

Last month I watched and talked about all 52 episodes of Justice League. I was going to leave this follow up series for a while but I've changed my mind.

Episode 1: Initiation 

With the previous mostly being a mix of two and three part stories, this show mostly went on singular stories and this one introduced Green Arrow. He's been avoiding signing up to the Justice League but here, he found himself on a mission with Supergirl, John Stewart and Captain Atom in order to defeat a nuclear-powered robot rampaging across Eastern Asia. It's a fun introduction for the character with the brief of Black Canary being the incentive for Green Arrow to change his mind about joining up. 7/10

Episode 2: For The Man Who Has Everything 

There's a few Superman stories that tend to pop up in other media often enough and this would be another one of them. It's Superman's birthday and Batman and Wonder Woman have presents for him. However Mongul got there first and with a parasitic creature, Superman got placed in a world where Krypton survived, his parents survived and both him and Lois/Lana hybrid were married and had a son. Of course, it would take a lot to snap Superman out of his idyllic false life and when he did, it didn't end particularly well for Mongul. 8/10

Episode 3: Kid Stuff

In the previous show, we got a good two parter with Morgaine Le Fay and Mordred and they're back here but not on the same team. In fact, Mordred's grown tired of his mother pulling his strings and used the Amulet of First Magic to remove all adults from Earth and rule over every child on the planet. This meant Morgaine reluctantly forming an alliance with the Justice League to stop her son. There's a good portion of the episode with the Justice League as children before they eventually got the better of Mordred. Mordred's final defeat was horribly fitting for the character. 7/10

Episode 4: Hawk And Dove 

Probably my least favourite episode so far, which despite the introduction of the title characters, it was also a Wonder Woman focused episode. An episode where she's angry at a petty criminal but needed to recruit the title characters in order to stop Ares from stirring up a civil war in Europe while getting himself a new ally in the Annihilator from Hephaestus. Fans of The Wonder Years will recognise the voices of both Hawk and Dove but this was a rather dull episode. 4/10

Episode 5: This Little Piggy 

Two Wonder Woman focused episodes in a row? What a treat but while the last one was a dull debut for a duo, this one introduced one of Diana's best enemies and then benched Diana for most of the time. The villain being Circe who got paroled from the Underworld and turned Wonder Woman into a pig. While Diana was on the loose, it was up to Batman and Zatanna to strike a deal with Circe in order for the witch to turn Wonder Woman back into her normal self. Add some unexpected singing and an amusing cameo from Medusa and I really loved this one. 9/10

Justice League (2001-2004) - Episodes 39-52 Reviews

Heading into the latter half of this second season, there was some surprise alliances, betrayals and oh, a little bit of Christmas cheer to boot.

Episodes 39-40: Eclipsed 

Ah, Eclipso. If you wanted someone to bring out the worst in nearly all of the Justice League, then he's the guy to do it. Trapped in an ancient lunar crystal called the Black Heart, it's discovery led to Eclipso's freedom and various Justice League members being possessed by him. Of course, The Flash managed to be resistant to his charms and it was the Flash that also saved his teammates from a weapon that would destroy both the Sun and the Earth. It's a pretty solid story. 6/10

Episodes 41-42: The Terror Beyond 

The first in a series of unlikely team ups, this two parter had Solomon Grundy working with Doctor Fate and Aquaman. The latter two need Grundy's help in taking down an ancient evil and Grundy's willing to go along with it for his own reasons. On the opposite side was Superman, Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl, who didn't like the idea of Grundy being used for Doctor Fate and Aquaman's plan. It's a strong story for Solomon Grundy, who's made into a more layered character with a poignant sacrifice to boot. 7/10

Episodes 43-44: Secret Society 

Gorilla Grodd had his moment back in the first season going up against the Justice League and now he's assembled a team. His team comprising of Giganta, Killer Frost, Sinestro, Parasite, Shade, and Clayface. They formed the Secret Society and they were also successful in capturing a quarrelling Justice League. I do find it interesting that throughout the series, we've had various takes on a bad Justice League with Shade being a consistent member in an ever changing team up. Grodd made for a good team leader before the Secret Society were inevitably defeated. 7/10

Episodes 45-46: Hereafter

Death of Superman, anyone? Yes, we're doing that but not quite. For the majority of this story, it was assumed by the Justice League that Superman has perished. This was after a new supervillain team composed of Metallo, Kalibak, Livewire, Weather Wizard, and Toyman. Instead he ended up in a different time zone where he teamed up with a reformed Vandal Savage to get back to his own time to reunite with his team and stop Savage in the present day. On the other hand, we almost had Lobo as a new Justice League member and he was rather fun in this story. 8/10

Episodes 47-48: Wild Cards

If Lex Luthor could get a returning villain story, then I guess Joker could too. Teamed up with Harley Quinn and the Royal Flush Gang, this story took place in Las Vegas where Joker's planted a lot of bombs over the Las Vegas Strip for good measure. There's a reference to an infamous Conrad Veidt movie that should make Joker fans smile as well as a nice attempt to give some backstory to the character of Ace. Honestly though, it felt like an idea that never got made for Batman: The Animated Series and was slightly retooled to work for here. 7/10

Episode 49: Comfort And Joy

I do love a good Christmas episode and I really, really loved this one. It's that time of year when even the Justice League are allowed to be off duty and as a result, we got three very satisfying stories. First of all, there was Hawkgirl and John Stewart choosing to relax by going to an alien bar and getting into a brawl. There was also snow fights and a kiss between the two of them. Then there was The Flash who wanted to get a popular toy for the kids in a children's home. This resulted in a rather team up with the Ultra-Humanite where the latter discovered his Christmas spirit. As for Superman, he brought Martian Manhunter home to Smallville and that contained two of the best scenes. The realisation that Superman still believed in Santa Claus and Martian Manhunter's singing at the end. I do wish we had gotten a Batman and Wonder Woman story but overall, this was a beautiful episode. 9/10

Episodes 50-52: Starcrossed 

The show started with a three part story, so it was fitting that it would end with one as well. It also started with an invasion, so ending with one would also be fitting. This time around, it was the Thanagarians with Hawkgirl's betrayal being revealed to the team. Hawkgirl has never been as prominent as she was in this story. There was her conflict in betraying the family she's made on Earth for the one she was born into. There was her burgeoning relationship with John Stewart and her past one with Hro Talak, who was pretty bad. As for the gang, they were captured, escaped, revealed their civilian identities, defeated the Thanagarians but also banished Hawkgirl. A bittersweet ending of sorts for the show. 8/10

Justice League (2001-2004) - Episodes 27-38 Reviews

Now for the first half of the second season, we've got the likes of Darkseid, Lex Luthor, Doctor Destiny and Despero causing all manners of trouble for the gang.

Episodes 27-28: Twilight 

Last time we saw Darkseid, he was being a right menace on Superman: The Animated Series. This time, instead of trying to brainwash the Man of Steel, he needed the latter's help, along with the Justice League. Now, why would Darkseid need their help? Well, he had a problem in the shape of Brainiac but even with that knowledge, Superman rightfully didn't trust him. Of course Darkseid would betray the Justice League but it did lead to another great fight scene between him and Superman. This two parter also brought in New Gods such as Highfather, Orion and Lightray. 8/10

Episodes 29-30: Tabula Rasa 

And he's back. Yes, you're never too far away from Lex Luthor and while his schemes to kill Superman continue to be a bust, he had other plans. One of them was reminding Mercy that even though he left her LexCorp while in prison, it's still his company. Then there was Amazo. Lex manipulated the android into seeing him as a father figure. Eventually, Amazon saw through Lex and departed Earth. There's a good subplot with Martian Manhunter's powers amplifying as he dealt with having to hear so many thoughts. 7/10

Episodes 31-32: Only A Dream

An early contender for one of the strongest stories in this second season. You have got John Dee awaiting parole from prison. He's not happy that his ex-girlfriend moved on quickly from him with a new guy. John Dee decided to overdose on an experimental treatment and transform himself into Doctor Destiny. In this guise, Doctor Destiny went out of his way to terrorise all of the Justice League until the same methods of terror would bd eventually turned on him. There's some supporting roles for the likes of Solomon Grundy, Firefly, Volcana, Luminus and Copperhead. One of the creepier stories and a brilliant one too. 9/10

Episodes 33-34: Maid Of Honor

This two parter brought up something interesting. While Batman and Superman know each others identities, to my surprise, Wonder Woman was unaware that Batman and Bruce Wayne are the same person. I find it interesting between there was some Batman/Wonder Woman and Bruce/Diana scenes that bordered on the flirtatious. There was also the return of Vandal Savage, who was engaged to Diana's new friend, Audrey, the princess of Kasnia. Savage was up to no good and Wonder Woman had a battle on her hands trying to convince Audrey how bad her future husband really was. It's an okay second outing for Vandal Savage as a villain. 6/10

Episodes 35-36: Hearts And Minds

As much as I like John Stewart on this show, so far, I'll admit that the Green Lantern focused stories have been a bit average at best. This one was no different as John reunited with former lover, Karma Tui along with other Lanterns such as Kilowog. The latter in particular didn't have the greatest of patience for The Flash but John Stewart and the Justice League were needed to rescue the Green Lantern Corps from Despero. The latter's used pretty decently in this story and there's some nice moments between John Stewart and Hawkgirl but it's rather weak for me. 6/10

Episodes 37-38: A Better World

This show really does love delving into alternative realities and this was another look into that. Imagine a world with the Justice Lords. They're like our Justice League but their Flash died and they're more willing to kill in order to maintain order. Their Batman was also clever enough to create a method of dimensional travel and intended to replace the Justice League. Because of this, the Justice League had to team up with Lex Luthor in order to send the Justice Lords back to their own dimension.
