My Review of Dead Boy Detectives: "The Case Of The Hungry Snake"

Written by Ross Maxwell
Directed by Pete Chatmon

Charles: "Wow, I did not see that one coming."
Edwin: "Allow me to welcome you formally to the Dead Boy Detective Agency. How should we address you?"
Night Nurse: "No, no, no. You may not address me at all. And the Dead Boy Detective Agency, that is a stupid name."

Well, that was a finale that somewhat ended on a cliffhanger that we might not get a resolution towards. Damn, Netflix and their cancel happy mantra. Unless this show does suddenly get a surge in views, it's likely toast.

On the plus side, one thing that was resolved was of course Esther Finch. Minus one episode, she's been a terror all season long with Jenn Lyon having a campy time in the process. Her scheme to feed off Edwin's pain to top up her youth when she wanted nearly succeeded. Fortunately, everyone was rooting against and I mean everyone.

She might have captured Edwin and Charles and blown up Jenny's butcher shop but she had also grossly overestimated just how hated she really was. The Cat King filled both Crystal and Niko in on Esther's backstory through animation and even Tragic Mick gave the girls some magical items to take out the bad witch.

However it was Crystal going over Esther's head and snitching on her to Lilith (Rochelle Okoye) that finally saw Esther dealt with for good. Unfortunately, Niko died in the process of Esther's downfall. Then it transpired that Niko was somewhere else in an igloo with the bitchy Sprites. That's one of two hooks for a potential second season.

The other hook being Edwin and Charles moving back to London with Crystal and Jenny. I have to admit I would've preferred had this season been London based from the start, so another reason for this show to get a second outing.

The bigger reason however would be The Principal (Tamlyn Tomita) allowing the boys to remain on Earth to solve cases with the Night Nurse as their unwilling chaperone. That hook alone should make this a slam dunk for a second season. I really want to see this somewhat new-ish dynamic next season.

- Edwin correctly guessed that there was 147 cats in Port Townsend, including the Cat King himself. Edwin gave him a peck on the cheek and Monty helped Charles free himself.
- Crystal's full name included Surname Von Hoverkraft and she was the epitome of mean girl bitch. Her parents hadn't noticed she was missing.
- Charles joked about calling the Night Nurse Charlie after a certain popular programme.
- Chronology: Pioneer Times for the Esther flashbacks. 2023 in general.

The Case Of The Hungry Snake set up plenty of stuff to tackle next season and it's a pity that this show might become yet another victim of Netflix's overzealous eagerness to cancel shows. This series does have potential and it'd be nice for it to get a second chance at life. Give it a go if you haven't already.

Rating: 8 out of 10
