Jessica Cruz: "No offense to anyone here but... Star Boy is my hero."
Going back to animated movies, there's something about this particular continuity that I enjoy the most. At some point, I will get around to reviewing both Justice League shows but for now, there's this movie to enjoy.
The movie first took place in the 31st Century where members of the Fatal Five - Mano (Philip Anthony-Rodriguez), Tharok (Peter Jessop) and The Persuader (Matthew Yang King) attacked the Legion of Superheroes. As a result, Star Boy (Elyes Gabel) ended up in the past.
Unfortunately for Star Boy, his memory wasn't the best, he wasn't in full control of his powers and trying to get pills resulted in him having a spell in Arkham Asylum. Then his powers and memories kind of resurfaced and he ended up as an ally to the Justice League, who had some new members.
First of all, the Trinity were intact with Batman (Kevin Conroy), Wonder Woman (Susan Eisenberg) and Superman (George Newbern) being present. However there was also Mr Terrific (Kevin Michael Richardson), Jessica Cruz (Diane Guerrero) and Miss Martian (Daniela Bobadilla) and there's interesting dynamics with the three of them.
For Mr Terrific, he was largely the tech guy for the team. There was Miss Martian being mentored by Batman and I quite liked the way those two worked together. Jessica's story had a serious element, underlying a depression while she also managed to bond with Star Boy in a rather sweet way.
As villains, the Fatal Five along with the likes of Emerald Empress (Sumalee Montano) and Validus are a strong group of adversaries and carry the movie well, going up against the Justice League and Star Boy. Their actions also resulted in certain characters stepping up in rather poignant ways.
- There's cameos from characters such as Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Bloodsport, Two Face, Kilowog, Salaak, Saturn Girl and Brainiac 5.
- Jessica was overwhelmed by seeing a statue of herself while Batman felt like the ears weren't correct.
- The canon supposedly is open ended but Bruce Timm does consider it to be canon to the shows.
- Chronology: Both the 31st and 21st centuries. Gotham City and Oa factor into the movie along with the Legion of Superheroes headquarters.
I really liked Justice League Vs. The Fatal Five. It felt like a nice continuation from the shows and I liked the inclusions of certain, even if I missed not seeing others.
Rating: 8 out of 10
