Vivian: "You hear that, you're mine."
Tristan: "Deary me."
We're into our fourth episode and maybe it's just me, but after the rug pull that Grotesquerie just pulled off, a part of me has been hoping that this show has one on the horizon. Mostly because this episode was the weakest one so far.
After two moderately improved ones, this episode largely focused on all thr negative aspects of Wellness Week, courtesy of our guest characters giving wellness a really bad name. Oh and a medical emergency for Avery.
The guests in question. Where do I begin? There was health guru and influencer, Bethany Welles (Amy Sedaris). One of The Odyssey's most influential guests, she wanted a raw meat diet and had her own chef, Vivian Montgomery (Laura Harrier) to implement the menu that Max was mostly opposed to. Tristan on the other hand was rather smitten with Vivian.
While Tristan and Avery somewhat clashed over the former's budding romance with Vivian, Avery also ended up with appendicitis on board. Plus side, it provided Tristan a moment to shine and the last scene with him, Avery and Max was a nice friendship moment between the trio.
The other guests of the week included a duo whose contempt for each other knew no bounds. Yup, watching both Judy (Margaret Cho) and Agnes (Kate Berlant) almost do each other in through Diva Dust smoothies and acupuncture was amusing enough but not that amusing.
Then there was Captain Massey. He did get his own moments to shine by having to navigate through a hurricane but even that was a plot the show could have done a bit more with. Now that could be more of a budget thing with the show.
- The opening scene had strip pocker and gave us potential recurring characters with ship engineer Rosie (Jacqueline Toboni), bisexual head of housekeeping Corey (Rick Cosnett).
- Although she didn't appear, we did find out that Lenore cancelled Bethany's contract with The Odyssey. Tristan calling Max "Doctor Odyssey" does feel a bit forced.
- Standout music: The Doors Riders On The Storm.
- Chronology: A week since the events of the previous episode.
I didn't vibe with Wellness Week and disliked all of the wellness characters. I did like the setting up of recurring characters like Vivian and Rosie and while the strip poker scene was a bit short, it was nice to see some of the characters during down time.
