My Review of Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice (2016)

Written by Chris Terrio And David S. Goyer
Directed by Zack Snyder

Lex: “Bruce Wayne meet Clark Kent. I love it. I love bringing people together.”

If ever there was a movie that seemed divisive in it’s inception, never mind actual release, it could possibly be this one. It would seem odd that the meeting of two of DC’s biggest superheroes on the big screen would generate such a reaction but when you have a director as polarising as Zack Snyder helming this movie, what can you expect?

I promise this review isn’t going to descend into a Snyder bashing fest but saying that, it’s hard to ignore the controversy his contributions to the DC movie universe have been so far. This movie however is not quite the disaster area that some more vocal critics seem adamant on claiming it is though and that’s something I feel should be emphasised.

It’s far from perfect and some of the mistakes that Snyder previous made with Man Of Steel resurface here as the director does seem to have an appetite for wanton city wide destruction during his climatic moments and it’s fair to say that Metropolis is possibly subjected to even more damage here than when it was just a guy in a red cape making his presence known to the world. Even I didn’t know what to make of the onscreen carnage we got during a certain segment when our heroes banded together to fight off a dodgy GCI version of Doomsday.

The main plot itself is a bit convoluted but the nuts and bolts seemed to be having Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) going to some of the strangest lengths in order to get both Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman (Henry Cavill) to respectively annihilate each other and it’s a plan that almost works too, sadly enough.

Eisenberg is possibly one of the most vile incarnations of Luthor we’ve seen in a long time. He doesn’t quite exude menace, in spite of his actions and many horrific acts but put it this way, even Joffrey Baratheon would side eye the little shit from a great distance. By the end of this movie, you’ll honestly want to bludgeon his Lex to death but revealing the actual fate of his character would be a bit too much of a spoiler, amongst many other things I’ll allude to but won’t reveal. Out of the two villains though, Lex does ultimately work better than Doomsday.

In terms of the heroes, this movie has essentially four of them. I wasn’t particularly enamoured with Amy Adams previous outing as Lois Lane but in this movie, she actually improved dramatically even if she was placed in three situations where she had to play the damsel in distress. Aside from those moments, she’s given plenty of opportunities to shine, help save the day and even break your heart and that’s a Lois Lane I can get behind.

As for the man of steel himself, I initially feared the worst for Henry Cavill with this one. I genuinely thought Superman was at risk of being sidelined in his own shared movie but thankfully I was wrong. Yes, there were certain things I didn’t like (his public shaming etc) but overall, Cavill really excelled himself, especially during the last half hour of the film.

Then there’s Ben Affleck. While I admit that I kept an open mind to his casting as Batman, a part of me did wonder if he was truly right for the part. Thankfully those reservations were allayed because Affleck genuinely felt like Batman to me onscreen. An older, more brutal version of course, semi—retired and scarred from losing many battles but motivated into maintaining his vigilantism as he feared that Superman could be a bigger threat to society before seeing the light. The movie rethreads some familiar territory with the caped crusader but not at the expense of slowing things down either. Basically, Affleck turned out to be a perfect choice to play Batman.

And of course, there’s also Wonder Woman. If there’s almost one thing all critics of this movie have been consistent of in their praising, it’s that Gal Gadot is perfect as the Amazonian demigoddess/princess/warrior and I’m not rocking the boat by suggesting otherwise. She genuinely is brilliant in the role, exudes warmth and charisma, lights up the screen and is great with both Batman and Superman during their fight scene with Doomsday. My only complaint is that I wish she had appeared in more scenes but it’s a minor quibble though.

In terms of supporting characters, the movie isn’t devoid of them. Holly Hunter is quite strong as a temporary antagonist for Lex in her role as Senator June Finch and Diane Lane has some choice moments as Martha Kent. Scoot McNairy has a bit of a pivotal role in Lex’s overall but I don’t feel much was really done with Laurence Fishbourne’s Perry White to be honest. The best supporting role however will go to Jeremy Irons as Alfred, subverting the role in a different way to Sean Pertwee’s take on the character in Gotham at the moment.

As for the cameo appearances – by now you definitely know who they are and they’re handled pretty well. They don’t intrude on things too much but they do whet the appetite for the Justice League nonetheless. The dream sequences/hallucinations on the other hand are a bit too distracting for some and probably should’ve been trimmed or scrapped altogether.

-  Opening and closing narrations truly set the tone for the movie in a big way. The retelling of Bruce’s back story was done nicely in this movie.
-  I’m genuinely surprised by one death in this movie and it’s not the one you think it is. Can you guess which one? As for the Easter Eggs we got here, nicely played.
-  Some of the stuff cut from this movie (namely the Jena Malone material) will surface on the DVD release.
-  Was it me or was there a lot of celebrity cameos in this movie? Looks like it’s not just Supergirl that’s tuned into the real world. Most of them I didn’t even know were happening until I was watching.

Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice was never going to be a perfect film. It always seemed destined from the start that it would not receive the type of love that Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy did and while a lot of the criticism for the movie and Snyder’s approach is certainly justified, I still think there was a lot to love here. All the main cast members were on fine form, there were some genuinely beautiful moments, character wise and the final act was an incredible mixture of action and heartbreak. It’s not going to be every DC fan’s cup of tea and it may alienate casual cinema goers but I definitely would recommend seeing it nonetheless.

DC Week: Movie Spoilers & TV Show Returns

Yup, this week really has been the week for DC, in terms of both small screen and big screen stuff and on Tuesday, the CW gave us some specials in relation to the upcoming movies.

The most exciting stuff of course was Suicide Squad. Not only did we get an official poster and some individual character ones but the main thing was a brand new trailer for the movie, which certainly revealed a lot. In the two and half minute trailer, we saw the dynamics of Joker and Harley, how the Squad were formed, Amanda reciting that they were the worst and the fun tag of 'Worst Heroes Ever'. Also with the use of Queen's Bohemien Rhapsody as part of the soundtrack, this is definitely going to be the movie of the year for me.

Meanwhile a new clip for Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice has been released after the trailer from the previous month. It seems that Kryptonite will play a role in the movie and as we've learned from last month, we know that Doomsday is also a main villain in this movie as well. The clip is pretty decent but it wasn't the only clip we saw during the special on the CW.

Although due next year, we were given a tiny clip from the upcoming Wonder Woman movie, which showed us a bit of a backstory for Gal Gadot's titular heroine and with the image I've posted we were also given a glimpse of the upcoming Justice League movie including Aquaman, the Flash and Cyborg too. Things are certainly hotting up now with the DC movie franchise.

Small screen fans though this week had the Toyman pop up in Supergirl, both Arrow and The Flash return to finish up their respective seasons and tonight will also mark the debut of Legends Of Tomorrow, which I fully intend to watch tomorrow morning.

Batman V. Superman: Two Casting Rumours/Gotham - Season 2 Promo Pictures

Take both with a pinch of salt as for obvious reasons neither have been exactly confirmed in relation to Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice.

We know that Robin somehow factors in the movie due to a certain moment we saw recently in the Comic-Con trailer but now it's currently rumoured that Zack Snyder's son, Eli might be playing the tragically killed off Boy Wonder and all because of an Instagram picture with the caption 'Boy Wonder'. It wouldn't be the first time that Eli has appeared in his father's work having made appearances in both 300 and Sucker Punch and it has yet to be denied as well. For the moment, I'm certainly not ruling it out. If it's true, then Jason Todd's death will get a live action depiction on the big screen.

Also remember when Jena Malone's casting was announced and we all possibly thought that she might be the first onscreen version of Carrie Kelly's Robin? Well, the latest rumours now is that Malone might possibly be playing Barbara Gordon/Batgirl/Oracle instead. If true, this would be the third time the character was depicted onscreen, given that we've had Yvonne Craig in Batman 66 and Alicia Silverstone in Batman & Robin. Given that we're getting an older version of Batman, it's likely (if true) that it might be the Oracle version of Barbara.

Meanwhile Gotham are pushing their promotional campaign for the second season. The latest posters are definitely geared towards the 'Rise of the Villains' arc this year, along with elevated regulars Morena Baccarin (Leslie), James Frain (Theo) and Jessica Lucas (Tabitha/Tigress) also featured in the pictures. In fact the recent trailers themselves have been heavily pushing that arc and it certain does look very exciting.

Gotham's second season airs Mondays 8pm from September 21st on FOX. Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice is in cinemas from March 25th 2015.

Comic-Con 2015: DC Panels Part 2

Second and final Comic-Con one in relation to DC, this time around covering both Gotham and the upcoming movies, Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice and Suicide Squad.

Gotham

- Season 2 will be known as the rise of the villains and considering that we've got Penguin as king of the city, the early days of the Riddler and the brother/sister duo of Theo/Tabitha along with unstable Barbara, you think that would be enough, right?
- Wrong! It's more or less looking likely that Cameron Monaghan (who is appearing in the opening episode for Season 2) is playing a younger version of the Joker. He certainly went down a storm at the Panel on Saturday.
- Now that Bruce and Alfred have found the Batcave, expect a whole new chapter in their relationship.
- Because this season will be about the villains, the story will get more epic as the city falls into chaos.
- Expect a "darker edge" this year.

Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice

We had the panel attended by Zack Snyder, Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams and Gal Gadot and along with the above image, we also a) found out that Affleck will be starring in a solo Batman movie, which he'll be co-writing with Geoff Johns and b) a new trailer was released for the main movie itself. Highlights include ...

- The rather slimy introduction for Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor. The words 'smiling assassin' never seemed more apt.
- Alfred repeatedly trying to persuade Bruce that Superman wasn't his enemy. Not to mention the actual face-offs between Batman and Superman as well.
- A little parting gift from the Joker, which suddenly makes those flashback rumours seem more plausible as well.
- Holly Hunter as a very worried Senator. Like everyone else, she's not so quick to embrace Superman.
- Wonder Woman in a few shots as well.

While I still have some reservations about this movie, I have to admit that the trailer released over the weekend did a far better job of selling the movie than the one released back in April did.

Suicide Squad

An edit here because due to the leaks, Warner Brothers have now released the trailer for the movie officially and it's a bloody thing of beauty. Much as I enjoyed the second trailer for Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice, let's just say the Suicide Squad trailer edged it out a bit more. Especially with that haunting song used in the trailer.

- Margot Robbie's take on Harley Quinn certainly looks fairly consistent with the character. There seemed to be a moment where she's being an acrobat in her prison cell.
- Amanda Waller forms the Squad with the sole intention of blaming them if things go wrong. Again, pretty consistent.
- Some good shots of Deadshot and Captain Boomerang, the latter who quips to Harley about crazy ones.
- Jared Leto's Joker definitely has a menacing vibe to him. I think it's safe to say they've struck gold here with Leto's casting.
- More to the point, I'm glad the movie won't shy away from the darker aspects of both Joker and Harley's relationship as well.

Also revealed during the weekend by DC was that The Killing Joke will be getting an animated movie next year with a 15 minute prequel that will surface online as well. Of course the story will be retold in a new way for it's animated debut though while Batman: Bad Blood will add Batwoman into the mix. 2016 is certainly going to be a busy year for both live action and animated Batman related films.

Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice - Exclusive Pictures From Entertainment Weekly

It might be another eight months before Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice hits the cinemas but with Comic Con coming next week, Entertainment Weekly have released some pictures and I decided to pick my favourite ones for this blog.

First of all - that cover is amazing. I might still have a lot of reservations for the movie itself after that underwhelming trailer from a few months ago but the cover is a work of beauty. On it, we've got Bruce Wayne/Batman (Ben Affleck), Diana Prince/Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and Clark Kent/Superman (Henry Cavill). Anyone else notice that Wonder Woman's costume actually has more colour to it than previous pictures had shown? Definitely an improvement.

A further six more pictures were released including a rather suggestive one of Bruce and Diana at a social gathering as well as Superman meeting an eager public. There was also this little beauty as well where we got to see Affleck's Batman with his eyes lit up facing Superman in a fairly intense looking scene. Of course one picture I definitely had to share here ...

Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. Lex Luthor with a full mane of red hair as well to boot. Now whether he loses his hair throughout the movie or not, it's an interesting look for Eisenberg's Luthor. Meanwhile the cast and crew for the movie will be attending Comic Con next week (July 11th), so another trailer may also materialise.

Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice - First Trailer Released

“Tell me, do you bleed? You will.”

With the release of a new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens yesterday, it does seem a little suspect that DC/Warner Bros would then go and release one for Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice but either way, we got one and it's an interesting enough one.

In the two minute trailer we had various/government types wittering on about power corrupting and people unwisely supporting those in power. Mainly it feels like a Superman bashing spree with even a mocking statue of the hero with the words 'False God' sprayed across it. Then there's the arrival of Ben Affleck's older and grouchier Batman too.

The trailer then ends with that cringe worthy exchange that I typed above. I hate to admit it but the trailer just didn't grab me and I was so looking forward to it. Perhaps I need to see it a few more times, but the rivalry between Batman and Superman just rubs me the wrong way. Perhaps if it didn't come across as so antagonistic, it wouldn't bother me so much. Then again, I'm sure better trailers over the next few months will get me on board though.

Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice - Latest Casting Rumour/Possible Spoiler

Now, this one is going to be interesting, assuming it turns out to be true ...

Jena Malone best known for her roles in The Hunger Games and Stepmom has now been rumoured to be appearing in Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice, after being spotted on set recently and of course, dyeing her hair red, it seems the actress is now rumoured to be playing Carrie Kelly, who to comic book readers will be known as the female version of Robin from Frank Miller's comics The Dark Knight Returns and The Dark Knight Strikes Again.

With parts of Affleck's depiction of Batman in the upcoming movie somewhat based on Miller's take on the character, it is possible that Malone could be playing a somewhat older version of Kelly (in the comics, Carrie is a 13 year old girl, Malone is 29) but it's also possible the actress could be playing another character altogether. Either way, it'll be interesting to see if the movie franchise will actually tackle a Robin that isn't Dick Grayson for the big screen.

Gotham/Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice - Comic-Con 2014

I decided to merge both Gotham and Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice together as their panels revealed some rather interesting stuff over the weekend.

First of all, let's talk about Gotham. For it's panel seven of the main cast members showed up along with Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon to divulge more on the upcoming series, including a screening for the pilot episode, which went down a storm with attendant on Saturday.

- When asked about combining the show with Constantine, Heller replied with a 'never say never' answer.
- Robin Lord Taylor admitting that he was "stepping into something amazing" in relation to playing Oswald Cobblepot.
- Jada Pinkett Smith enthused about working with Danny Cannon in order to create her character, Fish Mooney.
- Heller talked about the DC origin stories being his favourite thing about the universe, notably the death of the Waynes.

- Geoff Johns described Camren Bicondova as a "little Michelle Pfeiffer". To be fair, who hasn't over the last several months.
- Johns also said of Robin Lord Taylor that he "has the most brilliant interpretation of the Penguin".
- Another trailer for the series aired during the panel with clips for the second episode clearly added into the mix.
- Watch out for mentions of another famous city gangster and Arkham Asylum in the trailer.

Meanwhile when it comes to Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice ...

Prior to Comic-Con a clearer image of Ben Affleck in his Batman costume was released and I have to admit, it looks a damn sight better than what we got back in May. Of course, this wasn't the only reveal for the upcoming movie that we got during the weekend.

After months of waiting, we also finally got to see Gal Gadot in her Wonder Woman costume and to be fair, it's a nice costume. It also however looks like she's channelling Xena: Warrior Princess, which isn't strictly a bad thing as such either. Along with several cast members at the event during the weekend, a trailer for Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice was released exclusive to attendant there. It will be a while before we get to see it no doubt.

Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice: More Casting/Promo Picture

And more news on the upcoming Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice movie ...

First of all, a rather mean and moody picture of Henry Cavill's Superman has been released standing outside in the rain of Gotham City. Which at least revealed one not too shocking a spoiler. Now all we need are some pictures of Ben Affleck clearly in his Batman costume and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.

Elsewhere Scoot McNairy has been cast in the upcoming movie. The actor who also starred in Argo along with Ben Affleck had his casting announced a few days ago but it seems the role he's playing has not been disclosed. So he could be Nightwing or the Flash or someone else, even a villain perhaps? Hopefully it won't be too long before we find out who he's actually playing .

Meanwhile over on Gotham, acclaimed actress Carol Kane has been cast in a recurring role as the mother of Robin Lord Taylor's Oswald Cobblepot. Kane, best known for her roles in The Princess Bride and Freaky Friday will play Gertrud Kapelput while Kyle Massey has been cast in another recurring role as street kid, Mackey. The show will also premiere it's pilot at San Diego Comic Con on July 26th with several members of the cast and crew to attend the event.

Batman V Superman: Aquaman/Cyborg Cast

Continuing with the upcoming Justice League movie - sorry, I mean Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, we now have official casting for another hero added to the roster ...

Jason Momoa, best known for his roles in both Stargate Atlantis and Game Of Thrones will be taking on the role of Aquaman, though whether or not that actual name for the character will be used in the movie remains to be seen. However Momoa's role will not be a huge one in the upcoming movie though it seems to be confirmed that his character will not pleased about the World Engine and what it did to the Indian Ocean. Designs for the character are being finalised by director Zach Snyder so shooting can take place soon.

Another piece of casting I should've mentioned in a previous blog was the casting of Ray Fisher. The actor, best known for his theatre roles will be taking on the role of Victor Stone/Cyborg and like Momoa's Aquaman, Cyborg will have a tiny role in the upcoming movie. Other actors cast include Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey and Tao Okamoto, though their roles have not been specified just yet.

Batman/Superman Movie - Official Title Revealed

After months of speculation, the upcoming movie that will feature both The Dark Knight and the Man Of Steel finally has it's title revealed and it's called ...

Yes, it's called Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. As titles go, it doesn't exactly blow me away but it does seem fitting for a movie that will see Henry Cavill's Superman meet up with Ben Affleck's Batman and Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman and with filming for the movie begun, hopefully more interesting spoilers and casting news won't be too far off as well.

As for Batman: The Animated Series, I will start reviewing the series from next week with a post covering about five or six episodes (two parters discussed as a single episode) and probably posted at least once a week over the summer after rewatching the episodes in question. Whether or not I will take on Batman: The New Adventures, I'm not sure but if I do it will be in the same format. In terms of other animated shows (The Brave And The Bold, Beware The Batman etc), I don't plan to look at them for now but that could also change later, depending on time and how I get on with tackling Batman: The Animated Series.

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice will be released in cinemas from May 6th 2016.

Gotham - Airing/Cast Pics Update/First Pic Of Affleck In Costume

Is it me or has the Batman universe just been exploding in the last week? With Gotham, we've already gotten a trailer and now we have some goodies to mull over as well.

First of all, some new cast shots have been released of the main cast - including this group picture featuring the usual suspects, along with Cory Michael Smith's Edward Nygma (he's been promoted to a regular) and Clare Foley's Ivy Pepper. If you look at the cast shot, there's even some foreshadowing to another famous member of the Rogues Gallery as well, while individual shots feature both Erin Richards Barbara Kean and Zabryna Guevera's Sarah Essen as well. The show has also gotten an episode order of 16 episodes and will be paired up with Sleepy Hollow when it debuts in the autumn and I've also provided a link to the Upfront trailer which has some cast and crew interviews and newish footage. No word on a UK broadcaster just yet though.

Meanwhile we've finally gotten a picture of both the Batmobile (not a Tumbler folks) and Ben Affleck in costume and while hopefully some better shots are on the way, both look good so far. I actually like the smaller ears on the costume and the picture has a nice moody vibe to it as well. It's a nice look overall for Affleck.

Snyder To Helm Justice League Movie

If you weren't apprehensive about Zach Snyder directing the upcoming Batman Vs. Superman movie, well here's another reason to be, er worried ...

He's also going to be directing a Justice League movie (who didn't see this one coming?) alongside working on Batman Vs. Superman. However, while cinema goes can see Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck as the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight in 2016, it will be longer before the Justice League hits the cinemas - possibly as long as 2017 for instance.

Already Snyder is generating some doubts from fans over merging two superheroes together for a movie so really would merging several more be any worse? I guess only time will tell really on this one.

Batman Vs. Superman/Gotham - Casting & Spoilers

It's been a few weeks since I've blogged about anything in relation to both things but here's some new(ish) information that has leaked.

First of all, with Gotham, it seems we've got our main baddie with Jada Pinkett Smith. The actress, best known for her role in Scream 2 will be playing hotheaded and sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner, Fish Mooney while Drew Powell (Malcolm In The Middle) will play her second in command, Butch Gilzean. I have to admit while I'm not the biggest fan of Smith, I really have to admit that her character sounds intriguing as an antagonist and I'm certainly interested in seeing how her character also influences Robin Lord's Oswald Cobblepot into becoming the Penguin as he's also on her payroll as well. Also in some recent casting news, it seems that David Mazouz will play the role of orphaned Bruce Wayne while Camren Bicondova  will take on the role of teenage street thief and pickpocket Selina Kyle.

Elsewhere with Batman Vs. Superman, it seems that not only will filming begin soon but director Zach Snyder has revealed some tiny details as to what we can expect in the movie as well. It seems that the movie will take in both Batman and Superman's universes and will "explode them", which really could either way. The director praised Lex Luthor actor, Jesse Eisenberg as well, citing him as the "real deal". As you can tell, it's going to be a bit longer before Snyder reveals anything substantial on the matter. I intend to watch this movie but at the moment, is it me or is Gotham seeming more like the more exciting of the two?

Batman Vs. Superman - New Castings

This movie might not be surfacing until May 2016 but the casting for Batman Vs. Superman keeps a coming and now we've got actors confirmed for both Lex Luthor and Alfred Pennyworth.

Jesse Eisenberg, best known for his roles in movies such as The Social Network and 30 Minutes Or Less has been cast in the role of Lex Luthor. The 30 year old actor will be playing the legendary enemy of Henry Cavill's Clark Kent/Superman in the second movie. I have to admit, while I do like Eisenberg as an actor, his casting does seem a little left field and the fact that he's a tiny bit younger than Cavill is interesting. I'll keep an open mind though.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Irons who recently appeared in the TV series, The Borgias has been locked in to play the role of Alfred Pennyworth, the butler to Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne/Batman. I have to admit this is pretty interesting casting. It'll be interesting to see who else gets announced for this sequel over the next few months as well as seeing Affleck in his Bat costume as well.

Gotham/Batman Vs. Superman - Update/Casting Rumours

It's been a while since I've discussed anything Batman related (been currently buying/watching some of The Animated Series over the last while on DVD) but there has been some interesting developments though in this particular universe.

First of all, Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious 6) has been cast as Wonder Woman in the upcoming Batman Vs. Superman movie (which we're going to have to wait even longer for now). Like I've said before, this is looking less like a sequel to Man Of Steel and more a thinly veiled Justice League movie but given the troubles both the big and small screen have had in recent years to get this particular heroine onscreen, perhaps this is a turnaround of sorts. Elsewhere there were rumours that Girls actor Adam Driver was in in the running for Nightwing but the actor has denied this since. The movie however, which was meant to appear in 2015 has now been pushed to May 2016 instead.

Less confirmed however is Sons Of Anarchy actor Donal Logue playing the role of Detective Jim Gordon in the upcoming FOX series, Gotham. So far the actor has denied his involvement in the project but it has been confirmed that casting for a ten year old version of Bruce Wayne will be happening as well as backstories for some of the city's legendary of villains. it will also (not surprisingly) take some inspiration from Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy.

Meanwhile, the 1966 Batman TV series, starring Adam West and Burt Ward as the caped crusader and the boy wonder will also be getting a DVD release this year as well. While an official date has yet to be properly confirmed, we can thank Conan O'Brien for leaking that the series will be finally getting released. I just hope we get more concrete details on this soon. I definitely want to own this version of the Dark Knight on DVD.

Movie News: Ben Affleck Is Batman

It's been four days since the casting was announced and while this isn't a movie blog generally, I did promise some Batman content and here goes nothing ...

By now we all know that Ben Affleck (Argo to name one of his many credits) has been cast in the upcoming sequel for Man Of Steel, rumoured to be titled Batman vs. Superman and it's nice to know that people have generally learned nothing from past experiences. I can understand perhaps a lack of enthusiasm for Affleck's casting but do people really think petitions site against the man are going to achieve anything? Personally I think Affleck is fine enough casting - he looks the part, is the right age for the characters of Batman/Bruce Wayne the story is rumoured to be telling (an older, wearier version of the characters) and he's a good actor. You know, the stuff that actually matters in the grand scheme of things. Of course, even if he doesn't compare to the likes of Michael Keaton and Christian Bale, I can't see him faring worse than either Val Kilmer (who has openly supported Affleck's casting) or George Clooney.

However like many people, I do have some reservations. Actually a few to be honest and none of them are a reflection on Ben Affleck himself. I am actually confident that I'll like his version of Batman but it's hard not to admit that the inclusion of the character into the second Henry Cavill as Superman movie seems a tad forced. It's not that long since The Dark Knight trilogy ended and with Christopher Nolan not having any involvement in the project, can Zach Snyder really deliver? His direction in Man Of Steel has certainly divided movie goers over the summer and with a Justice League movie not far off either, you could argue it might be better to leave Batman and Superman meeting until then and just focus on further establishing Cavill's take on Superman without having the Caped Crusader overshadowing him in his own franchise. I'm definitely in two minds of it myself at the moment.

Elsewhere after it being rumoured for ages, it now seems that Bryan Cranston will be a part of the upcoming sequel as well. The Breaking Bad actor will be playing Superman's nemesis, Lex Luthor, having signed a deal for six appearances in the DC universe. Well, this just keeps getting better and better, doesn't it?

Filming for the Man Of Steel sequel will begin in 2014 with a summer 2015 release scheduled. I'll provide more updates as they come.
