My Review of Doctor Odyssey: "The Wave"

Robert: "Everybody enjoy your day at the port."

We have now entered the first part of what's looking increasingly likely to be a series finale for this show. While I'm aware there's a slim chance the show might get an eleventh hour save and secure a second season, I'm not optimistic that it will. I think we have a sinking ship.

Perhaps it's appropriate then that the basis for this two parter would be a freaking tsunami with a rumoured death lined up for a main character. To be honest, could this show survive without Dr Max Bankman? I think Joshua Jackson was the main reason a lot of people bothered to watch this show, even if they eventually bailed on it.

Having Max away from Avery for most of the episode after she berated him for his love confession was something of a relief. I thought his scenes with very chatty gay doctor Barry (Jim O'Heir) were delightful. They made for an absolutely fun team as they tried to help a poor guy who broke his leg.

Eventually the delightful duo ended up in an abandoned church where Barry talked more about himself and Max was in communication with the ship before communication ceased. Could this spell the end for our handsome doctor? We'll know in a week or much sooner if ABC release their Fall schedule today.

As for the antics on the ship, we had various characters going through thd motions. Guest character Marcus (Christopher Gorham) almost got himself killed in order to retrieve his disapproving stepdaughter's favourite book but there was also Robert going over his own superiors in order to go back to the port to rescue Max and company.

Now for the aspect of the episode I hated. This love triangle overall has done more harm than good for the show and quite frankly, Avery has come across as selfish with both Max and Tristan. It feels like she likes the idea of both men being in love with her but acts like they're an inconvenience when they want something more. I know we're supposed to root for Avery but I don't think the show has done a good job with that. At this point, both Max and Tristan should distance themselves from Avery outside a professional capacity.

- Tristan ended up back on the booze again when Avery told him about Max being in love with her.
- Jonathan Bennett also appeared in this episode. Corey also reappeared after mostly sitting the latter half of this season out.
- The CGI during the tsunami attack on the ship looked really rough in parts.
- Chronology: Three days since the previous episode and in Mexico.

The Wave certainly got this likely series finale off to a decent start. Rough CGI and Avery to one side, I did mostly enjoy this one. The Max and Barry scenes being the most enjoyable.

Rating: 6 out of 10
