My Review of Green Lantern: First Flight (2009)

Appa Ali Apsa: "Where are you going?"
Hal: "I've gotta go punch a clock with my other boss. I can see where this is going to be a long commute."

Before Ryan Reynolds did a certain degree of damage to the name of Hal Jordan, there was an animated movie that actually got the character off to a better start. Imagine if it had been this version that gotten the live action treatment. Things might have been different for the character.

You've got the rather cocky test pilot Hal Jordan (Christopher Meloni), who he wasn't having a friends with benefits relationship with his boss, Carol Ferris (Olivia d'Abo), found himself caught up in a much bigger story. For Hal, he was about to get a new lease on life and quite the job offer.

The death of Lantern, Abin Sur (Richard McGonagle) had the Guardians of the Universe and Sinestro (Victor Garber) recruit Hal and bring him all the way to Oa. It was there that Hal became a member of the Green Lanterns with a mixed reception from his teammates.

Teammates included the likes of Boodikka (Tricia Helfer), Kilowog (Michael Madsen), Tomar Re (John Larroquette) and Kanjar Ro (Kurtwood Smith). These characters had some mistrust with Hal while Sinestro played mentor to the test pilot. Of course with Sinestro, there was an ulterior motive.

It wouldn't be a Green Lantern movie if you didn't have Sinestro betraying the Guardians, killing a fellow Green Lantern Corp just so he could learn the location of Qward and become a Yellow Lantern. His plan almost succeeded but he gravely underestimated Hal's ability to step up to the plate.

It's the third act where this movie really did stick the landing. The odds were very much against Hal until they weren't. It also helped that Kilowog turned out to be more resilient than expected. By the end, Hal helped with the rebuilding of Oa and had to face commuting between his old and new life.

- The movie has a follow up of sorts with Green Lantern: Emerald Knights.
- The animation style for this movie reminded me of the Justice League animation show but it doesn't seem to be in that continuity.
- There's some nice references to Blackest Night and Sinestro Corps War.
- Chronology: Present Day America and Oa.

Now this movie in live action would have been such a better debut for Hal Jordan. Green Lantern: First Flight deftly handled his origin and then got into the thick of it with Sinestro's storyline. I really enjoyed this.

Rating: 8 out of 10
