First of all, I regret not covering this show last year when I was doing Comic-Con related blogs but I am covering it now and this was a fun panel to watch.
The panel itself comprised of writer George R.R. Martin, producer Carolyn Strauss (previously from Six Feet Under) and cast members - Richard Madden (Robb), Alfie Allen (Theon), Michelle Fairley (Catelyn), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys) and Rose Leslie (Ygritte) and they were certainly an entertaining bunch to watch. Even watching this alone and you can see why Game Of Thrones has become such a massive hit and cultural icon.
The cast themselves were on brilliant form, giving some excellent anecdotes on filming, their characters, favourite locations, their sigils of choice (Emilia's not wrong about the dragons) and even some discussion from Rose Leslie about living in a castle and her previous show, Downton Abbey as well. Even I want to see how Ygritte would deal with the Crawleys now myself. Best of all was listening Alfie Allen as he was telling audiences about the producers wanting him to be a naked zombie. I'm sure there are a few fans out there who wouldn't object to some of that, eh?
Of course the biggest thing to emerge from Comic-Con with this panel wasn't just the airdate for the third season (which has begun filming) but also the casting for some major roles for the next season. Diana Rigg will be playing Olenna Tyrell, Mackenzie Crook will be playing wilding raider, Orell and Tara Fitzgerald has also been confirmed as Lady Selyse with Kerry Ingram as daughter, Shireen. Additionally we can also expect Clive Russell as Catelyn's uncle, Bryndon 'The Blackfish' Tully, Thomas-Brodie Sangster and Ellie Kendrick as siblings Jojen and Meera Reed, Nathalie Emmanuel as Missandei, Toby Menzies as Edmure Tully as well as Paul Kaye as Thoros of Myr, Philip McGinley as Anguy, a key member of the Brotherhood Without Banners with Beric Dondarrion, played by Richard Dormer as their leader and that's only scraping the surface. George might have joked about it at the event but perhaps he is going to have to up the death quota with the amount of new players we're going to get next year. Still, though, exciting times ahead nonetheless.
